Revered and considered 'aumākua, or family gods, sharks represent strength, protection, and guidance. They're considered sacred and believed to have supernatural powers. "Niuhi" or tiger shark in the Hawaiian language is particularly respected. The presence is tangible when a big tiger shark is in the water anywhere near you. Other sharks leave the area and it becomes clear that there's a very large, powerful creature present that demands respect.
